The extensive research and analysis by the Manx TaxPayers’ Alliance found that during the Quayle Administration, staff numbers in the Department of Education, Sport and Culture increased by around 20%. Despite that surge in staff, no extra teachers or lecturers were hired: the surge in staff numbers came entirely in other roles.

As a result, a higher proportion of wages were spent on non-teacher/lecturer roles.

We now – yet again – have insufficient teachers to fully operate one of the most crucial services delivered by Government: schooling.

Adrienne Burnett, Head Teacher at Ballakermeen High School announced today:

It is with regret that I have to inform you that Years 9 and 10 will be required to remain at home for the rest of the week, from Wednesday 16th – Friday 18th March. We have 23 teachers absent, plus a number of cover supervisors and I cannot see attendance rates improving quickly. There is also a lack of supply teachers available.
